BMW 635d Convertible (2007-) Review![]() ![]() ![]() It is something of a surprise that BMW has taken so long to produce a diesel version of the 6-Series The German manufacturer is famed for its high quality diesels, but has dragged its feet with the 6-Series and for four years customers have only been able to choose from petrol variants. Rising oil prices and a demand for less thirsty cars has seemingly forced BMW's hand, which means that even its high performance models get the diesel treatment. So it's a convertible diesel. Sounds like heresy, but this is not just any old diesel. BMW have used its flagship 282bhp twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six that generates an incredible 427Ib-ft of tourque peaking at 1,750rpm. The performance stats are just as impressive. The sprint to 62mph is completed in 6.6 seconds; all the more impressive considering the 635d in Convertible guise has a hefty kerbweight of almost two tonnes. The new diesel BMW 6-Series also gains the mildest of facelifts. From the front it's hardly noticeable, but look a bit harder and you'll see a deeper, wider gaping front bumper that's complemented by BMW's stylish 'daytime' ringed headlights. There's also a new rear spoiler that incorporates a brake light. Pricing for the 635d Convertible kicks off at £59,600 for the standard car, stretching to £61,800 for the top-of-the-range Sport. Competition for the 635d Convertible is difficult to ascertain, since neither of the other established brands offer big 2+2 convertibles with diesel power. Rivals are limited to the Jaquar XK and the Mercedes SL which poses the question: will the diesel-powered 6 offer refinement levels fitting for the class, or will it leave owners pining for a petrol V8?
