Detroit 2009: Audi Sportback

Audi Sportback

This large, posh five-door hatchback previews the A5 Sportback. Its styling also gives us a few hints for the A7 four-door coupe and the upcoming new-generation A6.

It's based on the A4/A5 underpinnings and fitted with a powerful, economical and clean-running 3.0 V6 TDI diesel engine; this will make it into existing Volkswagen-Audi ranges later this year.

Don't think of this 'Sportback' as being some kind of a practical station wagon, though: it's purely a four-seater, and Audi sees it more as a rival for the likes of the  Mercedes-Benz CLSthan an estate-type carryall. If you want a load-lugger, you'll have to stick with the A6 Avant.
